Details of Experience:

Dona had tested positive for COVID 19 and was admitted to Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare. She presented to the hospital with a severe cough, occasional shortness of breath, and diarrhea. The hospital admitted her and proceeded to do several tests on her. She was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure, acute pneumonia, and dehydration. Dona was given antibiotics, fluids, and electrolytes. After her stay in the Methodist hospital, she was driven by ambulance from Memphis, Tennessee, to Nashville, Tennessee, admitted to Bethany Center.

Upon admission, she was greeted by our Care Transition Coordinator and the nursing staff. The nursing staff completed their initial evaluation, provided her with a welcome basket filled with all essential toiletries, and helped her get settled into her new room. The following day, the Director of Concierge Services met Dona and welcomed her with a welcome bag, and completed her initial evaluation. The concierge shared information about the community during the initial evaluation, her dietary needs and requests, hobbies, and more!

Our team of highly trained therapists was ready to meet with Dona and complete their evaluation and set specific goals for her.

Dona participated in therapy five times a week for one hour a day. Dona was ready to get into therapy and complete her goals. She was prepared to get back home with her daughter and enjoy her hobbies! Therapy assessed her and set specialized goals for her to meet. Some of those goals included: safely performing functional transfers, ambulating safely on level surfaces 25 feet while maintaining oxygen saturation, improving endurance, and ambulating on unlevel surfaces up to 15 feet. Although Dona was ready to get into therapy and meet her goals, there were a few roadblocks. There were days that she did not feel the best and didn’t do her therapy. She had abdominal pain, and that interfered with her treatment in therapy. Once her pain subsided and the therapist and concierge worked together to create a reward system for her, she participated in therapy daily. Dona was doing well with transferring with minimal assistance but refused to ambulate. By 11/8, she could transfer with minimal assistance to and from the bathroom, to and from the bed, and to and from the chair. She stated, “I started to feel more motivated when I felt comfortable enough to transfer.” By 11/15, she could ambulate 10 feet on level surfaces and 5 feet on unlevel surfaces. Dona worked very hard with therapy for the next few weeks and kept pushing herself to get better and better. She shared, “some days were harder than others, but I knew if I kept working, I would meet my goals and get to go home.” By 12/3, Dona was able to ambulate 300 feet on level surfaces and 150+ feet on unlevel surfaces!

She had met and surpassed all of her goals! Nearing Dona’s discharge date, the concierge met with her to complete her discharge evaluation. Dona was very thankful for the entire Bethany Team and all they had done for her to get to where she is now.

We wish Dona the best as she discharges home!
