Details of Experience:
Mr. W was admitted to Bethany from St. Thomas at the beginning of December following a stroke he experienced in November. Upon admission, he was welcomed by the admissions nurse, who assisted him to his room and helped him get settled. Additionally, the Director of Concierge was present to welcome him to the community and help him acclimate to his new surroundings.
As a result of his stroke, Mr. W initially had no movement in his right leg and was highly dependent when it came to bed mobility. He was unable to sit at the edge of the bed without full assistance. After just three weeks of physical therapy, however, his progress has been remarkable. Mr. W is now walking with a platform walker and can transfer with supervision at times. He continues to improve his walking and leg movement.
One of the physical therapists working with Mr. W noted that the adduction in his leg had progressed significantly, an area that is often very difficult to regain following a stroke. His knee extension had also shown major improvement. He is now able to sit independently and upright with supervision and maintain his balance.
Mr. W’s stroke affected more than his physical mobility—it also left him nonverbal. Initially, he was unable to produce words or sounds. During his first week of speech therapy, he focused on repetition and imitation of single sounds. One exercise involved using a mirror to observe and model sounds demonstrated by his therapist. Within three weeks, Mr. W made substantial progress. His consistency with single-word speech has improved, allowing him to communicate more effectively with staff. He has also demonstrated significant improvement in swallowing, resulting in a positive change to his diet.
After speaking with all of Mr. W’s therapists, one thing was consistent: he is a hard worker. He is highly self-motivated, and his determination to improve is evident in every therapy session. As a former fitness trainer, he clearly carries his strong work ethic into his rehabilitation.
Although Mr. W is still a current resident at Bethany, his progress in such a short time has been truly inspiring. With continued therapy and his unwavering determination, he is working toward returning home and resuming the activities he loves. The staff at Bethany will be there to cheer him on as he continues on his healthcare journey.
