How did this patient hear about Bethany Center? Our amazing marketer Brittany met with him while he was at Vanderbilt and told him all about our facility.
Details of Experience:
On August 29th, Mr. K went to work like any other ordinary day. While crossing railroad tracks, he was struck by a train in his work truck and rushed to Vanderbilt hospital. This traumatic accident left Mr. Knight with facial and head lacerations requiring sutures and staples. He fractured his ribs, collar bone, and his shoulder. He also had a broken arm and nose. From all the injuries, Mr. K was left in excruciating pain. The act of taking a breathing, something we do without thinking was very painful. Mr. K also suffered from dizziness due to the head trauma from the accident. He recalled a time at the hospital when the care team tried to sit him up and he fainted from being so dizzy. Mr. K remembered being very angry and frustrated because he was unable to do what they were asking of him.
He was admitted to Bethany on September 5th. Upon admission he was greeted by one of the nurses who assisted him with getting settled into his room. The Director of Concierge Services came to meet him and complete his admission evaluation. During the evaluation, he shared that his goal was to be able to walk again on his own and get back to his normal self. Our therapy team was confident he would reach that goal with consistent PT and OT sessions.
After evaluating him, they put him on a plan where he would attend therapy five days a week. During these sessions, they focused on strength and balance. Mr. K did exercises like seated strength, standing balance, outdoor fitness, and more. All of which he progressed through rather quickly. He went from needing full assistance on day one to being able to get up on his own with some assistance after less than a week of therapy. Now less than thirty days from admission, he walks on his own with just the assistance of a cane.
During his stay at Bethany, he was always so positive and eager to get up every day and make new strides. He joined the activities department in a game of miniature golf, and everyone in the dining room was blown away by how good he was doing even with a broken arm. Mr. K said this showed him he still has the same abilities and skills he thought he lost after the accident. He stated that it feels unreal thinking about how far he has come. He felt like he reached some of the goals he set during the new admission evaluation.
Although it may not have been easy, Mr. K never gave up. His story is truly inspirational to us all. It has truly been a pleasure having him here with us. As Mr. K transitions back home, we wish him nothing but the best on his healing journey!
